During the Fiji Law Society Convention 2024, Attorney-General Graham Leung expressed his concerns regarding the current state of the legal profession in Fiji, particularly regarding the influx of young lawyers. Speaking at the Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa, Leung pointed out that some newcomers to the field may be motivated by misconceptions about the profession’s glamour or the financial rewards it could bring.
Leung emphasized the critical role that senior lawyers play in mentoring and guiding younger practitioners. He challenged those with more experience to not only facilitate the development of their junior counterparts but also to prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead. He stressed the importance of fulfilling a collective responsibility to nurture talent in a profession that has seen a significant increase in younger members.
The Attorney-General urged established law firms to take an active role in supporting their less experienced colleagues, as many face difficulties entering an increasingly competitive market. He noted that a solid understanding of legal values is essential for lawyers to tackle Fiji’s numerous challenges effectively.
In a nutshell, Leung’s comments signal a need for a transformative approach within Fiji’s legal community, encouraging cooperation and mentorship between generations of lawyers. By fostering an environment of support, the legal profession can work towards a more cohesive and competent future.
This call for unity and mentorship highlights an optimistic future for the legal sector in Fiji, where seasoned attorneys can help to cultivate a new generation that is prepared to meet the demands of their profession head-on.
