During the recent Fiji Law Society Convention 2024 at Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa in Wailoaloa, Attorney-General Graham Leung expressed significant concerns regarding the legal profession in Fiji, particularly about the performance of younger lawyers. He noted that the influx of new lawyers may not be translating to improved quality within the profession.

Leung pointed out that some individuals may have entered law with the misconception that it is inherently glamorous or lucrative. He emphasized the responsibilities of senior lawyers in mentoring and guiding these young practitioners, questioning whether they are adequately preparing the next generation to tackle the challenges ahead.

He urged established firms to play a supportive role, stating they have a moral obligation to help younger lawyers who often find themselves struggling in an increasingly competitive landscape. Emphasizing the importance of understanding the values of their profession, Leung alerted members of the legal fraternity to the pressing challenges facing Fiji and the need for effective legal support in addressing them.

This dialogue at the convention highlights both the challenges and opportunities within the legal sector in Fiji. As the profession evolves, a collaborative and mentoring approach can enhance the skills of new lawyers, ultimately benefiting the legal system and society as a whole. It is vital for the legal community to unite in fostering a new generation that is both competent and committed to upholding the law.

The discussion from the convention serves as a hopeful reminder that through mentorship and shared experiences, the younger generation of lawyers can be equipped to meet the complexities of the legal landscape, contributing positively to Fiji’s future.
