Lawyer Yogen Kumar has officially confirmed his representation of Reginald Roniesh Lal, who is facing serious charges related to the falsification of documents. Mr. Lal appeared before Magistrate Pulekeria Low in Suva and is accused of dishonestly altering four tax compliance certificates issued between February 2016 and August 2018. These alleged falsifications are reported to have occurred from January 2015 to September 2016, resulting in unlawful financial gains from both Advance Construction and Aldex Trading Ltd.

During the court proceedings, which marked Mr. Kumar’s first appearance representing Mr. Lal, he indicated that while he has received all necessary disclosures from his client, he is still waiting for additional documents to conduct a thorough review of the case. The prosecution, led by Lavenia Ravuikadavu of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), informed the court that a draft of the agreed facts would be provided to the defense shortly. She also noted that Mr. Lal had made partial admissions during a recorded caution interview and that 20 witnesses would be called to testify.

Magistrate Low reminded both parties that this case has been ongoing since 2018, emphasizing the need for resolution. Mr. Lal’s bail has been extended, and the case is set to reconvene on February 11.

This situation underscores the legal system’s commitment to addressing allegations of dishonest practices in business and taxation. As the proceedings continue, there is hope for clarity and resolution, which emphasizes the importance of accountability and ethical conduct in corporate practices.

In summary, the case involving Mr. Lal and the efforts of FICAC illustrate the ongoing endeavors to uphold integrity within Fiji’s business sector, promoting a greater sense of justice and trust in governance.
