Lawyer Jerry Dinati has been instructed by the High Court to pay a fine of $200 within two weeks due to unprofessional conduct. The ruling came from Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, who expressed disappointment over Mr. Dinati’s repeated failures to appear in court.

During the proceedings, Justice Bulamainaivalu sought an explanation from Mr. Dinati regarding his absences. Mr. Dinati defended himself by stating that he was providing pro bono services for his client, Manasa Bulaisea Qalotaki, and indicated that he had not received communication or instructions from Mr. Qalotaki. He requested the court to verify whether his client required Legal Aid.

However, the judge criticized Mr. Dinati’s inconsistent statements and urged him to be truthful, emphasizing the importance of honesty in the courtroom. The judge remarked that Mr. Dinati’s approach appeared to undermine his credibility, saying, “Don’t lie, you are making matters worse for yourself.”

As a consequence of his conduct, Justice Bulamainaivalu imposed the $200 fine as an alternative resolution, with the case set to resume on November 15.

This situation highlights the essential role of professionalism and integrity within the legal system. Although challenges may rise, adherence to ethical standards is crucial for maintaining public trust in legal professionals. Moving forward, this incident could serve as a reminder for all lawyers to uphold their responsibilities with diligence and respect for the court.

In a hopeful light, this may encourage the legal community to reflect on their practices and improve communication with clients, ultimately enhancing their service quality.
