Lawyer Yogen Kumar has confirmed that he is representing Reginald Roniesh Lal, who faces accusations of document falsification. Mr. Lal appeared before Magistrate Pulekeria Low in Suva, charged with dishonestly altering four tax compliance certificates dating from February 2016 to August 2018. The alleged falsifications are said to have occurred between January 2015 and September 2016, leading to unlawful gains from Advance Construction and Aldex Trading Ltd.

During the proceedings, Mr. Kumar noted that this was his first appearance representing Mr. Lal and he indicated that he had received all necessary disclosures but was still waiting for additional documents to conduct a comprehensive review. The prosecution, led by Lavenia Ravuikadavu of FICAC, mentioned that a draft of the agreed facts would be provided to the defense shortly. She also revealed that there were partial admissions made by Mr. Lal during a caution interview and confirmed that 20 witnesses would be called to testify.

Magistrate Low reminded both parties that the case has been ongoing since 2018 and scheduled a hearing date for later this year. Mr. Lal’s bail was extended, and the case will resume on February 11.

This situation highlights the legal system’s efforts to address allegations of dishonest practices in business and taxation. With ongoing legal proceedings, there is a hope for clarity and resolution, emphasizing the importance of accountability in corporate conduct.
