Lautoka’s Under-16 football team has made history by securing the inaugural National Under-16 league title with an impressive performance over the weekend, clinching two wins in the playoffs. The team triumphed over Labasa with a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to a solitary goal from Veleni Rasorewa at the Fiji Football Academy ground in Vatuwaqa. This victory followed a hard-fought battle against Navua, where Lautoka edged ahead with a thrilling 3-2 win in their opening playoff match.

Coach Kaveen Chand expressed his pride in the team’s accomplishment, recognizing the challenges they faced, including pressure from high-caliber opponents like Labasa and Navua, both of which had previously been regional champions. “It’s a great achievement as it will go in the history book of Lautoka football since this was the first-ever playoff for the Under-16 division and baby blues won this,” said Chand, highlighting the significance of their victory.

The Lautoka team dealt with several obstacles during their campaign, including the absence of key players who were committed to elite teams in Labasa, weather-related difficulties in training, and the demanding schedule of weekly away games. Looking ahead, Coach Chand emphasized the necessity of preparing for the 2025 season by incorporating experienced players to mentor the younger members of the squad.

Chand extended gratitude to the supporters, officials, and parents who provided unwavering support throughout the league campaign. Meanwhile, Labasa is set to play Navua in the final playoffs later today.

The achievement of Lautoka’s Under-16 team not only marks a significant milestone for the club but also symbolizes the emergence of youth talent in Fijian football, encapsulating the spirit of perseverance and teamwork. As they transition into the next season, there is great hope that they will continue to build on this success, contributing positively to the future of football in Fiji.
