Two tragic accidents took place yesterday morning in Lautoka, resulting in the loss of life. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, reported that both incidents happened during the early morning hours.

The first accident occurred shortly after midnight, leading to the death of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that while he was driving along Barara flat towards Nadi, he lost control of his vehicle, which veered off the road. The driver, along with three passengers in the car, was rushed to Lautoka Hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. Two of the passengers remain hospitalized in stable condition, while the third has since been discharged.

The second accident, which is thought to be a hit-and-run, occurred after 3 AM on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was found by a passerby who quickly took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana mentioned that traffic investigators are currently looking into the incident to identify the vehicle involved.

This year’s road death toll currently stands at 50, a slight decrease compared to 71 reported during the same period last year.

These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for increased awareness amongst drivers. Community efforts to promote safe driving could help further reduce accidents in the future, emphasizing that each life saved carries significant value.
