The Golden Age Home in Lautoka is facing a significant challenge as its current building has been deemed unsafe due to a severe termite infestation and structural decay. The home, which is currently sheltering 36 elderly residents, is now in the process of relocating to a temporary facility at the former Lautoka Police Station on MN Naidu Road.
The Board of Visitors has expressed urgency in appealing for public assistance. They acknowledge that while the new location is essential, it requires immediate refurbishment to meet necessary safety, comfort, and care standards for the residents. To facilitate this transition, the Golden Age Home is seeking contributions in the form of cash donations and essential items such as bedding, clothing, kitchen utensils, and cutlery.
Given the extent of the infestation, all existing beds and furniture must be discarded to prevent contamination at the new facility. Renovations are already underway, and the Board expects these to be completed by early August 2025.
This need for support comes amid a broader crisis affecting the aged care sector in Fiji, which has been described as reaching “pandemic” levels. Facilities like the Golden Age Home are not isolated in their challenges; others, such as The Home of Compassion and the Father Law Home, are also struggling with financial difficulties and the need for urgent government support.
The key takeaway is a growing recognition that, while the situation is dire, it has ignited a sense of community awareness and willingness to assist. The collective response from individuals, businesses, and organizations can play a pivotal role in ensuring the dignity and quality of life for the elderly residents during this critical time.
The ongoing efforts to refurbish the facility and provide care echo sentiments shared at recent forums emphasizing the importance of advocacy for increased funding and support for elder care services in Fiji. Together, these actions foster hope and demonstrate that concerted community efforts can lead to positive outcomes for vulnerable populations.
