The construction of a multimillion-dollar swimming pool in Lautoka is continuing to face setbacks, leading to extended waiting times for residents eager for its completion. The Lautoka City Council has confirmed that this project has been in a state of inactivity for over six years, with plans for the re-scoping of the existing pool yet to be finished.
Initially budgeted at $4.5 million, the project’s budget has seen an increase, now totaling $6 million due to rising costs. Although construction commenced in 2018, progress faltered after the first contractor was terminated in 2020, causing delays.
Lautoka City Council Chief Executive, Mohammed Anees Khan, noted that a new contractor has yet to be appointed, as the project manager is still working on finalizing the plans. Khan explained, “Once the project manager, with the help of his designers, completes the re-scoping of the project, tender packages will be prepared and advertised for bidding.” This process will include separate tenders for civil construction and the procurement of necessary filtration equipment, with hopes of attracting international bidders.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of effective management in government-funded projects. Simultaneously, the Minister for Local Government expressed optimism that the swimming pool project could be completed by March of next year.
This project is recognized not just as a recreational facility but also as a potential site for international swimming competitions, with ongoing considerations for upgrades to meet global standards as local demand increases. Past reports have indicated that equipment could be sourced from the Fiji Sports Council, along with rental options from facilities in Australia and New Zealand.
Despite the frustrations stemming from the delays, there is a sense of cautious optimism surrounding the pool project and other initiatives aimed at enhancing community infrastructure in Lautoka, such as the renovation of the bus stand. This reflects a continuing commitment to improving local amenities and fostering community engagement through modern recreational opportunities.
In conclusion, while the path to completion has been riddled with challenges, the next few months hold potential for meaningful progress that will ultimately enrich the community with improved recreational options and promote healthier lifestyles.
