Lautoka had to put in a strong effort to secure a 3-1 victory over Navua in the opening match of the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship at Churchill Park this evening.

The home team started on a high note with Saula Waqa and Sitiveni Cavuilagi finding the net in quick succession, giving Lautoka a 2-0 lead at halftime. The challenging playing conditions made it tough for both sides throughout the match.

Navua managed to get back into the game when a long cross from 40 yards by Jared Rongolisua was ruled a goal by the assistant referee, despite Lautoka goalkeeper Benaminio Matainaqara having initially caught the ball.

The situation worsened for Lautoka when Sakaraia Naisua received a red card for a second bookable offense, leaving the team with only ten players. Navua pushed hard for an equalizer, but Lautoka’s top scorer, Sairusi Nalaubu, secured the victory with a solo goal in injury time.

Looking ahead, Navua is set to face Suva in their next match at 2 PM tomorrow, while Lautoka will take on Labasa at 8 PM.
