Lautoka’s Coronation Park Redevelopment Sparks Debate Over Growth and Green Space

The Coronation Park development project in Lautoka is currently in its early stages, as confirmed by Taitusi Rasoki, the chair of the Lautoka City Council’s special administrator board. This initiative, announced last month, seeks to transform a pivotal area of the city through a significant public-private partnership, necessitating a rezoning of the currently protected parkland along Tavewa Avenue.

The Lautoka City Council has earmarked funding for the project, which borders the Coronation Church compound, with the aim of boosting the town’s economy. Despite these ambitious plans, a public consultation held on October 23 revealed substantial opposition from residents concerning the potential impact on Coronation Park, which holds historical significance for the community.

In a similar previous initiative, the council’s collaboration with Challenge Engineering Pte Ltd outlined the development of a mixed-use building, featuring commercial tenancies and hotel accommodations. Residents had expressed numerous concerns over the loss of park space and environmental issues related to the project.

The Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association, led by president Narayan Reddy, has been vocal about the need for the council to consider community concerns seriously. Although the council has assured that the development will not encroach directly into the park, apprehensions persist about its impact on the surrounding areas and how much parkland will remain accessible.

Assurances from Seema Sharma, the permanent secretary of the Lautoka Government Ministry, indicate a thorough scrutiny process for any proposed developments, particularly those affecting public parks. During discussions, Sharma reiterated the importance of preserving community interests while navigating urban growth.

As Lautoka works towards modernization, the ongoing dialogue between local authorities and residents is pivotal. The intention behind the Coronation Park project reflects a hopeful trajectory—one that emphasizes economic growth while striving to balance the preservation of vital recreational spaces for the community. The commitment to public consultation and community feedback underscores a collaborative approach, aiming to create developments that align with local values and priorities.
