Lautoka’s Alarming HIV/AIDS Surge Sparks Urgent Call for Action

Health officials have expressed alarm over the increasing number of HIV/AIDS cases in Lautoka, as highlighted by Dr. Arvin Chaudhry, the head of the Family Health Clinic Western. Since his arrival from England, Dr. Chaudhry has identified seven new cases, raising the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Lautoka to 22. He emphasized that the actual number could be significantly higher, as many individuals remained unaware of how they contracted the virus. During confidential counseling sessions, several patients admitted to having multiple sexual partners, prompting Dr. Chaudhry to suggest that the true figure could be five to ten times greater.

A further cause for concern is that all diagnosed individuals are aged between 20 and 35 years. In related developments, campaigner Tuberi Cati, who lives with AIDS, has highlighted the need for meaningful activities to engage youths in Bua. She noted that many young people currently lack constructive outlets and often resort to drinking yaqona and casual sex, which could contribute to the rise in HIV/AIDS cases.

Bua parliamentarian Josetaki Vula remarked that it is imperative for the Ministry of Health to enhance its outreach by directly engaging communities to raise awareness about the disease, especially targeting young people. He called for an increase in educational efforts within the province to combat this pressing public health issue.
