Residents of Lautoka embraced the New Year with joy, flocking to beaches and parks despite less-than-ideal weather conditions. Long queues of vehicles were spotted along Lomolomo Beach as families sought available spots to celebrate together.

Waisea Nawasoni, a local resident, shared his gratitude for reaching another year, enjoying the company of family from overseas, as well as his grandchildren. “We spent Christmas in Lautoka, and we decided to welcome the New Year here at Lomolomo Beach,” he expressed.

Ifran Ali Sahib highlighted the excitement of his extended family, who arrived at the beach early with a hearty BBQ feast including lamb chops and sausages. He noted that a large turnout reflected the community’s festive spirit.

Additionally, the Nayavu Women’s Club from Wainibuka embarked on a day trip to the west by chartered bus, allowing 48 members to enjoy a scenic road trip. Club member Mere Vunirewa remarked on their appreciation for the improved weather, which followed a period of rain. The women planned to visit Fulton College in Sabeto and enjoy a night at the nature park at Yadua sand dunes before returning home.

The bustling atmosphere at Lomolomo Beach and the camaraderie seen in families and community groups demonstrate a positive start to the New Year, filled with hope and togetherness. This celebration reflects resilience and the joy of connection during festive times, showcasing the spirit of community in Lautoka.
