Residents of Lautoka now have increased access to eye care services with the recent opening of Asgar Optometrists’ new branch on Vaqalo Street. General manager Vidya Lakhan highlighted the clinic’s established history, tracing back to its founding by Dr. Asgar Ali in Suva in 1957, and its subsequent expansions to locations in Ba and Nadi.

The new branch’s relocation from Sugar City Mall to its new Vaqalo Street address was driven by the growing customer base, leading to the need for a larger, more accommodating space. Lakhan shared, “After 18 months of searching, we finally found this place,” indicating the clinic’s commitment to meeting the demands of its clientele.

In addition to the new location, Asgar Optometrists is investing significantly in upgrading its equipment. Lakhan announced an expenditure of close to half a million dollars for new technology that will enhance lab operations in Suva, indicating a proactive approach to improving service delivery. This upgraded equipment, sourced from the United States, is expected to be operational by the end of August, with specialized staff training to ensure optimal usage.

This development reflects the broader trend towards improving healthcare access in Fiji, aligning with recent initiatives such as free eye screenings across the nation facilitated by organizations like the Island Eye Clinic and New Vision of Fiji. These programs aim to enhance eye health accessibility, particularly in underserved areas, echoing the optimism of improved health outcomes for local communities.

The establishment of Asgar Optometrists’ new clinic embodies a hopeful advancement in eye care availability in Lautoka, paving the way for enhanced preventative and treatment services that can significantly uplift the quality of life for residents in the region. As more facilities open and healthcare services expand, the future looks promising for comprehensive eye care in Fiji.
