Lautoka is taking significant steps to address its litter issues with the launch of a new Return and Earn Centre. This initiative is designed to enhance recycling efforts and prevent beverage containers from clogging drains, littering roads, or ending up in landfills.
The Lautoka City Council informs residents that they can exchange used plastic bottles and aluminum cans for cash at the centre. Trained staff will be available on-site to facilitate the process and ensure a seamless experience for participants. The Return and Earn Fiji program actively encourages families to gather containers, with cash refunds provided for each returned item. Most beverage containers are eligible for this initiative.
This new centre is part of a broader national campaign aimed at improving recycling practices throughout the country. It is set to open on Thursday at the IYC Children’s Park, operating every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am to 1 pm. Additionally, the service will be available at Vunato Landfill on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Council officials highlight the cooperative efforts with beverage companies and Return and Earn Fiji, which are instrumental in making recycling more accessible to the community. Moreover, this initiative fosters a culture of long-term environmental responsibility, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
