The Lautoka City Council is embarking on a remarkable public-private partnership to reshape a vital area of the city, specifically targeting land currently designated as Coronation Park. This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance urban development and community facilities. The council has announced its collaboration with Challenge Engineering Pte Ltd to develop Lots 4 & 5 on ND 3747, which involves rezoning the protected parkland along Tavewa Avenue.
In a recent public notice, the Council outlined that this development will follow a “Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer” (BOOT) model, which allows for sustainable management of the property post-completion. Concept designs from Maisuria Designs Pte Ltd reveal an ambitious plan for a three-story mixed-use building. The ground floor will feature commercial tenancies alongside a hotel reception, while the first and second floors are set to accommodate hotel rooms—promising to create a dynamic hub for both residents and visitors.
The existing park facilities will not be entirely lost in this transition; there are plans to upgrade and enhance the remaining sections of Coronation Park, ensuring that community recreational spaces remain a priority. The current zoning classifying the area as a ‘Civic Zone’ will require adjustments, as the Council seeks to navigate the legalities of modifying zoning laws to facilitate this initiative.
In efforts to foster community involvement and feedback, the Council has organized a stakeholder consultation meeting, scheduled for October 23, 2025, at the Lautoka City Council Chambers. The Chairperson for the Board of Special Administrators, Taitusi Rasoki Kata, emphasized the importance of public input in shaping the future of this site, reiterating the council’s commitment to transparent communication with residents.
This partnership and proposed development signal a transformative period for Lautoka, building upon previous city initiatives that reflect responsiveness to community needs. For instance, the recent removal of long-standing construction barriers at Shirley Park has demonstrated the council’s intent to revitalize public spaces for community use. In addition, significant upgrades planned for Churchill Park Stadium highlight a consistent commitment to enhancing recreational infrastructure across the city.
As Lautoka continues to develop and modernize its amenities, these projects are expected to invigorate local spirit, boost economic activity, and establish the city as a vibrant destination. The Council’s proactive approach illustrates a hopeful trajectory, aiming to balance urban growth with the preservation of community values and spaces.
