Smoke from Lautoka’s Vunato dump, which has long affected the city’s air quality, may soon be mitigated thanks to the initiation of a feasibility study for a new landfill site. This move aims to implement a project similar to the Naboro Landfill concept, according to Lautoka City Council CEO Mohammed Khan, who confirmed that the council is collaborating with the Ministry of Local Government for this crucial endeavor.

Currently, the Vunato dump receives an average of 75.5 tonnes of waste daily, amounting to 40,330 tonnes annually. Minister Maciu Nalumisa emphasized that addressing this waste accumulation is vital for environmental health. The government is also looking into the rehabilitation of existing dump sites in nearby areas such as Sigatoka, Ba, and Rakiraki.

In the event of a landfill fire, the response strategy involves isolating the affected areas to prevent the spread of flames, and employing heavy machinery to create fire breaks. This safety measure is crucial, particularly considering the historical challenges faced by the Vunato dump in managing fire incidents.

Moreover, the focus on waste management in Lautoka is echoed in ongoing discussions regarding the broader challenges facing landfill sites across Fiji. Past articles have highlighted the urgent need for sustainable waste disposal solutions as current sites reach capacity. Minister Nalumisa’s initiatives, supported by collaborative efforts with international agencies like the Asian Development Bank, aim not only to improve waste management infrastructure but also to incorporate sustainable practices into local communities.

By promoting waste segregation at the source and encouraging recycling among residents and businesses, authorities aim to reduce the tonnage of waste transported to landfills. This aligns with the ongoing development of strategies that enhance waste management capabilities, ensuring healthier environments and sustainable practices for future generations.

With these initiatives, there is a renewed sense of optimism in Lautoka and across Fiji that a more effective approach to waste disposal can be realized. This project represents a significant step toward addressing long-standing waste management issues and fostering environmental sustainability.
