Lautoka swimming pool on track to finish next year amid delays

The Lautoka swimming pool project is on schedule to be completed by August or September of next year, according to special administrator Ajay Kumar. This announcement was made during a public consultation held by the Lautoka City Council, where residents expressed their frustration over the ongoing delays associated with the project.

Kumar confirmed that a contractor has been appointed and that a consultant is currently in the process of calling for tenders necessary for the completion of the facility. He addressed concerns raised by local residents about the project’s timeline, stating, “I can confirm by the end of August or September next year, the project will be completed.” This assertion comes after considerable public dissatisfaction regarding the transparency of the project’s management.

Simla resident Sadhana Sen highlighted the community’s demand for clarity, urging the council to be forthright with ratepayers about the use of taxpayer money. “We are not stupid people. You have taken taxpayers’ money and you’ve wasted it,” she stated, emphasizing the need for transparency following years of uncertainty.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa acknowledged the complexity of the project, explaining that its size and the time it had been inactive significantly contributed to the delays. He encouraged patience as the council navigates through the necessary processes to finalize the long-anticipated facility.

This swimming pool project has faced a tumultuous history, initially budgeted at $4.5 million, with costs now reaching an estimated $6 million due to unforeseen circumstances. The project has been stalled for several years, with previous contractors failing to complete the work and subsequent audits raising concerns about the financial management of allocated funds.

Despite the delays and challenges that have marred the project, there is a renewed hope as the latest assurances from the council signal a potential turnaround. Previously reported commitments indicated that the swimming pool will not only enhance recreational opportunities for residents but also set a foundation for future international swimming competitions.

Looking forward, community engagement and planned upgrades reflect a positive outlook for the project, suggesting that when completed, the facility will not only serve as a local recreational hub but also draw events that could benefit local businesses and foster a vibrant community atmosphere. Furthermore, greater accountability measures implemented by the council may lead to more effective governance and project management strategies moving forward, promising a brighter future for Lautoka’s public infrastructure.
