The long-awaited Lautoka Swimming Pool project is making significant progress, with tenders for the final phase of construction closing earlier this month. Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa announced the update on Monday during the inauguration of the upgraded Lautoka bus terminal.

Minister Nalumisa confirmed that the tender for the swimming pool project closed on January 13 of this year. He expressed optimism about the project’s completion, stating that the Lautoka City Council is diligently working to ensure the pool is ready for the public before the end of the year.

This announcement comes alongside various updates about developments in Lautoka, including the opening of the new bus terminal and improvements to local market facilities. Nalumisa expressed appreciation to the residents of Lautoka for their patience as the swimming pool project approaches its final stages.

Originally initiated in 2017 as an Olympic-standard facility, the swimming pool project faced numerous setbacks, including severe mismanagement and contractual complications, which caused delays and inflated the cost from an initial estimate of $2 million to approximately $12.6 million. In response to these challenges, authorities have engaged new contractors and are focused on a final push toward completion.

As the project nears fruition, there is a sense of renewed hope and excitement among the community, signaling that the long journey toward enhancing local sports facilities is finally reaching its conclusion.
