A heart-wrenching incident unfolded yesterday at a prominent school in Lautoka, where a four-year-old child tragically lost her life after a gate collapsed on her. The incident occurred around 6 PM, with the child being discovered motionless under the heavy gate located at the school’s back entrance. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she unfortunately did not survive.

Police spokesman Wame Boutolu confirmed that the child was found unresponsive beneath the gate and was declared dead at the hospital by medical professionals. Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances leading to this tragic accident.

This heartbreaking event sadly adds to a series of recent tragedies involving young children in Fiji. In previous incidents, children have met untimely deaths due to accidents such as vehicle collisions and falls, highlighting the urgent need for heightened safety measures for children. These incidents underscore the importance of ensuring safe environments for children, both in schools and at home, to prevent such devastating occurrences.

The community in Lautoka, as with previous incidents in places like Rakiraki and Macuata, will undoubtedly rally together to support the grieving family in what is an unimaginably difficult time. The tragic series of events serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of young lives and the collective responsibility to secure safer environments for them.
