The Lautoka Rugby Union is set to launch its season with a franchise competition scheduled for early next month, following a delay attributed to the search for sponsors for team jerseys. Head coach Peniona Ranitu emphasized the importance of securing these sponsors prior to the competition.
Ranitu stated, “We have postponed our franchise to early next month because we are still looking for sponsors for jerseys.” The franchise competition will span eight weeks and is pivotal for the selection of the Lautoka Maroon squad, which will be finalized at the conclusion of the tournament.
Additionally, in a forward-thinking move, the Lautoka Rugby Union will introduce a women’s competition this season, aiming to foster inclusivity and promote women’s rugby within the region. According to Ranitu, “We are grateful that the women’s competition will be part of us this season.” The organization plans to field at least four women’s teams, allowing for a direct selection of players for the women’s squad based on their performance in the competition rather than through individual scouting.
This initiative marks a significant advancement for women’s rugby in Lautoka, echoing similar developments in Fiji’s national rugby landscape aimed at enhancing women’s participation in the sport. Notably, the introduction of women’s competitions aligns with the Fiji Rugby Union’s commitment to promoting gender equality and providing essential opportunities for female athletes.
The focus on building a robust women’s competition not only enhances the visibility of female athletes but also creates an environment that encourages young women to pursue sports, reinforcing the broader momentum towards inclusivity in athletics. This endeavor promises a hopeful future for women’s rugby in Fiji, with potential growth in participation and recognition throughout the region.
