Lautoka Rugby Union head coach Penioni Ranitu expressed his determination to elevate the team’s performance in 2025 during a recent interview. He reflected on a successful 2024 season where the club defied expectations, challenging some of the more established teams in the league. Despite narrowly missing the Skipper Cup quarter-finals, the year was marked by significant triumphs, including the historic win of the Farebrother Sullivan Trophy after a 21-year wait. Lautoka secured a 16-10 victory over defending champions Nadi at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, led by standout player Isikeli Rabitu, who not only scored a crucial try but also successfully converted two penalties.

Ranitu attributed the team’s success to intensive preparation and a strong focus on blending younger players with seasoned veterans, allowing everyone to gain valuable game experience. Looking ahead, he set ambitious goals for 2025, including aspirations to reach the Skipper Cup quarter-finals, semi-finals, or even finals. The team plans to maintain rigorous pre-season training and recruit new talent to strengthen their roster.

A highlight for the future is the emergence of Isikeli Rabitu, who has been recognized as one of the top promising U21 players for 2025. Coach Ranitu praised Rabitu for his consistent performance in the Skipper competition and anticipates that the upcoming season will be pivotal for him as he strives to make his mark in Super Rugby.

With a solid foundation and a commitment to growth, Lautoka Rugby Union is poised for an exciting journey ahead, showcasing resilience and a drive for excellence.

This upcoming season promises not only a chance for individual players like Rabitu to shine but also an opportunity for the entire Lautoka team to solidify their position in Fijian rugby, providing hope for fans and supporters alike. The dedication displayed by both players and coaching staff sets the stage for a competitive and thrilling rugby year.
