Lautoka Residents Fear for Safety Amid Dark Streets

Residents along Vomo Street in Lautoka are expressing concerns for their safety due to malfunctioning street lights that have been out of service for several months. This issue appears to extend to many streets in the area, leaving residents uncertain about whom to contact for assistance.

Peni Nabainivalu, a concerned local, stated that he has been unsure of whom to report the problem to, noting that the lights have not functioned properly for almost a year. He emphasized the danger posed to the community, particularly for the elderly, as intoxicated individuals often gather in the dark.

The lack of lighting has reportedly led to unsettling incidents, including harassment, with young boys reportedly lurking in the darkness. Nabainivalu mentioned that his brother-in-law recently had his vehicle vandalized, having its back window smashed while parked.

Another resident, Rajesh Lata, shared similar grievances. Although she reached out to the Lautoka City Council, she was directed to contact the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) but was unsure how to proceed. Lata pointed out that it is particularly concerning when people congregate under the trees near her home at night, and noted that only a portion of the streetlights in her vicinity are non-functional.

Lata expressed her fears regarding potential criminal activity, highlighting the dangers presented by poor visibility on such a busy road. The residents are advocating for improved street lighting, which they consider crucial for urban safety.

Queries sent to the Fiji Roads Authority regarding the lights have not yet received a response.
