Women, Children, and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran has voiced her deep concern regarding the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Lautoka earlier this year, where the suspected perpetrator remains unidentified and at large. The victim recently gave birth to a baby boy on November 4, leading her aunt to file a report with the Social Welfare Department regarding what she termed “police inaction” in the case.
Kiran emphasized the unfortunate reality that the young girl is now faced with the responsibility of caring for another child, describing it as a tragic situation. “It’s deeply distressing to know another innocent life had to undergo such a traumatic experience,” she stated, highlighting the emotional toll on the young mother.
To support the victim through this challenging time, the ministry is providing essential services, including counseling. Kiran reassured the public that the ministry is in close collaboration with the police, who have assured them that the investigation is progressing, fostering hope that justice will be attained.
Police spokesperson Wame Boutolu confirmed that investigative efforts are still ongoing. He emphasized that law enforcement is exploring every avenue, including DNA testing, to advance the investigation. The community awaits resolution as both the ministry and police work diligently to support the young mother and ensure her safety and well-being during this trying time.
