The Lautoka swimming pool project is nearing completion, according to Narayan Reddy, president of the Residents and Ratepayers Association. He indicated that only a few features, including the installation of a filtration system, remain before the facility can be open to the public. Reddy remarked that the project has been a longstanding issue and expressed concerns about previous financial shortcomings that delayed its progress.
The project’s budget faced significant challenges, with the Lautoka City Council having anticipated receiving $12.6 million from the government but only receiving $5.5 million, as highlighted by former council horticulturalist Shri Charan. He emphasized that while expectations were high when funding began in 2017, the actual disbursement fell short, leading to project delays that spanned several years. Additionally, the council had to allocate around $1.06 million from its own budget to keep the project moving when government funds did not arrive as expected.
In light of these challenges, Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa has committed to providing further information regarding the financial discrepancies raised by Mr. Charan. This reflects a growing awareness and responsibility among officials to ensure accountability in managing public funds.
While the residents have expressed frustration over these delays and the mismanagement of funds, there remains a sense of optimism as new assurances have been made regarding the completion schedule. Minister Nalumisa announced in Parliament that the swimming pool project could be finished by 2026, supported by additional funding allocations aimed at restoring trust in the project’s governance.
