As the new school year kicks off tomorrow, families in Lautoka took advantage of the weekend to prepare by shopping for stationery and uniforms. However, many parents are feeling the pinch of rising costs.
Single mother Asenaca Ratudradra expressed her concerns to local news, stating that the government’s back-to-school assistance of $200 is insufficient in light of increasing prices for uniforms, books, and stationery. “In previous years, school supplies were more affordable, but this year, prices have slightly increased,” she noted.
With her son entering Year 11, Ratudradra indicated that she would need to spend an additional $200 to $400 on necessary school items. To help cover these expenses, she has taken to selling vegetables at the Lautoka market.
This year’s challenges serve as a reminder of the financial pressures faced by many families during back-to-school season, yet the resilience of parents like Ratudradra highlights the lengths to which caregivers will go to support their children’s education. Despite the difficulties, this determination showcases a hopeful commitment to the future of their children.
