The murder trial of Alivereti Lesukiyasawa, charged with the death of Joseph Johnson three years ago, has been postponed. Mr. Lesukiyasawa is accused of fatally attacking Mr. Johnson on February 19, 2022, allegedly while under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on Evan Street in Lautoka, where Mr. Johnson’s body was subsequently discovered.

During a hearing today before High Court judge Justice Sunil Sharma, it was announced that the trial, originally set to commence on February 9, will now begin on February 17 due to a judiciary workshop scheduled for that same week. State counsel Laisiasa Baleilevuka indicated that the prosecution intends to use admissions made by Mr. Lesukiyasawa during his caution interview as key evidence.

The defense was prepared for the trial and expressed no objections to the prosecution’s made submissions. Consequently, Justice Sharma adjourned the case until the new trial date. As the case continues to unfold, it highlights the ongoing pursuit of justice in the community, reflecting the legal system’s commitment to addressing serious crimes.
