A 28-year-old man, Rupeni Tokabe, appeared in Lautoka Magistrate’s Court on July 30 charged with murder in connection with the death of his wife, 25-year-old Makelesi Balekana, following a domestic dispute at their Kaleli Settlement home in Lautoka on July 28.

Prosecutors told the court that Balekana’s post-mortem examination report had not yet been completed, a point Magistrate Seini Puamau pressed for a clear explanation on. She noted concern over filing a murder charge without a post-mortem result. Coroner Nacanieli Lomani confirmed that Balekana’s death certificate listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death. The magistrate ordered that the post-mortem report and the caution interview transcript be ready for the High Court.

Prosecution officials opposed granting bail on the basis that the offence is indictable. Tokabe was remanded in custody, and the case was transferred to the High Court in Lautoka, with a further hearing set for August 13.

Reports indicate Tokabe intends to seek legal aid as the matter advances to the High Court. This incident continues Fiji’s ongoing focus on addressing domestic violence, underscoring zero tolerance for gender-based violence and the need for timely post-mortem reporting and thorough investigations to ensure due process.

What to expect next: The High Court in Lautoka will take up the case on August 13, where further directions regarding the post-mortem, caution interview transcript, and any bail considerations are expected to be addressed. The case also highlights broader public safety and domestic-violence prevention efforts, with authorities urging continued awareness, support for affected families, and constructive dialogue to reduce violence in homes.

Overall, the proceedings reflect the community’s demand for justice and safety, while offering a hopeful note that strengthened investigations, legal procedures, and supportive programs can help prevent future tragedies and promote healthier relationships within Fiji’s families.
