The Sugar Industry Tribunal has announced that the Lautoka mill of the Fiji Sugar Corporation will stop crushing on October 7 for the 2024 season. Tribunal member Semi Leweniqila made the announcement after discussions with the CEO of the Sugar Cane Growers Council and the CEO of FSC.
Leweniqila urged all growers and harvesting gangs in the Lautoka Mill area to do their utmost to harvest and deliver their sugarcane to the mill by the deadline of October 6. The Lautoka mill started its crushing operations on June 5.
No reasons have been provided for the premature end of the crushing season, whereas last year the mill continued operations until November 19.
