The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has announced the resumption of operations at its Lautoka mill after a brief shutdown due to a detected tube leak in the boiler’s furnace back wall. The shutdown prompt an immediate halt to steam systems to prevent further damage, allowing repair crews to mobilize quickly. The mill is expected to be back in operation by 6 PM today after swift emergency repair works were successfully completed.
This shutdown affected many local sugar-cane lorry drivers, with over 20 vehicles lined up outside the mill since Saturday. Many of these drivers, traveling from Ba and Tavua, faced considerable hardships, including staying overnight in their trucks due to delays, resulting in financial losses. Other lorry drivers reported waiting at the mill since early morning, and they are now seeking compensation for their unproductive waiting times.
Despite facing challenges like low cane supply and mechanical fluctuations, the FSC’s engineering and maintenance teams responded swiftly to restore operations. The company has also taken steps to support affected stakeholders during this downtime, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring that all involved are attended to during operational disruptions.
Significantly, the corporation is prioritizing the smooth operation of its services, with all departments on standby to ensure operational stability. Emphasizing customer service, the FSC assisted in transporting lorry drivers home during the shutdown to ensure their comfort and safety.
Previous reports regarding operational challenges at the FSC’s various mills, especially compared to the more efficient Labasa mill, highlight the ongoing concerns about delays caused by equipment malfunctions that impact drivers. Nonetheless, with the Lautoka mill’s operations set to resume, there is hope for a return to stability and improved service delivery in the sugar sector, benefiting farmers and drivers alike.
The resilience of the industry, bolstered by proactive measures from the FSC, indicates a pathway toward recovery and better performance as the season progresses.
