Beyond the headline

The Lautoka Market Vendors Association recently held a training session focused on solid waste management in collaboration with the Lautoka City Council Health Department. The workshop, facilitated by Shalend Singh, the director of services at Lautoka City Council, covered essential topics such as composting, practical demonstrations, and food preservation methods. These skills are vital for promoting sustainable and climate-resilient operations within the market.

Filomena O’Neil, president of the vendors association, highlighted that the training sessions aligned well with Gov4Res’ emphasis on nature-based solutions and community resilience actions aimed at mitigating climate and disaster risks. O’Neil stated, “Through the support of the UNDP Gov4Res Project and the M4C Project, this training integrates a risk-informed approach to everyday livelihoods, fortifying local governance for resilience, promoting safer and more sustainable practices, and ensuring that women and socially vulnerable groups are included in decision-making processes.”

This initiative reflects Gov4Res’ commitment to aligning community initiatives with climate-resilient development and inclusive governance. Supported by the Governments of Australia, New Zealand, KOICA, SIDA Sweden, and the Government of the United Kingdom, the workshop gathered 20 market vendors who play a crucial role in local food systems.

The training represents a proactive step towards building more resilient local communities, fostering sustainable practices, and enhancing the capacity of vendors to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Through such initiatives, there is hope for a more sustainable future for both vendors and the wider community they serve.
