The Lautoka City Council has taken a firm stance against littering, delivering a strong warning to offenders after successfully identifying and penalizing individuals responsible for illegal dumping along Queen’s Road in Wairabetia. Shalend Singh, the head of service, detailed the council’s proactive measures, which followed a previous enforcement action involving Litter Prevention Officers at Savu Street.
After conducting a thorough investigation, the council identified one offender responsible for multiple waste piles. This individual was issued three litter infringement notices in accordance with the Litter Act of 2008 and was mandated to remove the illegally dumped rubbish immediately. A follow-up inspection on Sunday confirmed that all three heaps had been cleared with the assistance of an excavator and truck.
In addition to this enforcement action, council officers held awareness sessions with local vendors at Saweni Top, resulting in one offender being fined for littering. The council worked with its rural garbage contractor to eliminate remaining litter heaps located opposite the Superfoods supermarket, enhancing the cleanliness of the area.
Singh reaffirmed the council’s commitment to continue tracking down and penalizing litter offenders, emphasizing that every effort will be made to enforce the law and hold accountable those who violate it. He encouraged residents to collaborate with the council to maintain Lautoka City’s cleanliness, safety, and natural beauty.
