Lautoka is seeing significant engagement in sustainability efforts, with 28 schools actively involved in a clean schools program, as reported by CEO Mohammed Anees Khan of the Lautoka City Council. This initiative was notably showcased during the Global Recycling Day event last week.
The city council is not only fostering school participation but is also subsidizing compost bins for residents. This initiative aids in managing green and organic waste at home, thereby reducing pressure on the Vunato Dump site. Khan proudly noted that the council has achieved a remarkable milestone of composting 100% of market waste.
In addition to individual efforts, the Lautoka City Council is actively collaborating with the Pacific Recycling Foundation on its “Connecting the Dots Strategy.” This collaboration extends to grassroots recycling organizations and various development partners, including JICA, UNDP, ADB, and USAID. Khan expressed his hope that this collaborative model will inspire other municipalities in Fiji and throughout the Pacific region, promoting improved waste management practices.
Khan encouraged other areas in Fiji to adopt similar cooperative strategies, urging both residents and visitors of Lautoka and Churchill Park to engage in the I Recycle program and maintain sustainable practices in their everyday lives.
Engaging schools and the community demonstrates a growing consciousness about sustainability, resonating with the recent launch of the I-Recycle program in Churchill Park, which has raised the bar for sustainable waste management in Fiji. Through fostering a sense of community responsibility and cooperation, Lautoka is paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
These ongoing waste management improvements not only enhance environmental sustainability but also create a foundation for a culture of sustainability that will benefit both present and future generations. This proactive approach highlights a collective commitment to a greener environment, something that resonates with communities worldwide.
