Lengthy approval processes and stringent regulatory requirements are hindering new developments in Lautoka, which raises concerns regarding the city’s economic progress, according to Richard Shafiq, President of the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He emphasized that while efforts to attract investors are active, there are still significant challenges to overcome.

Currently, the Prouds complex stands out as the only major project confirmed at this time, with an investment of $12 million. This forthcoming shopping mall is anticipated to generate jobs and is expected to be completed by 2027. Shafiq highlighted that the approval landscape is complex, with multiple departments, such as the Lands Department and the Mineral Resources Department, involved in the process. He noted that while the path to development is time-consuming, progress is being made.

Shafiq pointed out that previous communication gaps between the Chamber and the Lautoka City Council have been largely addressed, aiming to enhance collaboration to expedite development efforts. He expressed the necessity for new projects to facilitate employment opportunities and foster long-term economic growth in Lautoka.

“Development is crucial for Lautoka City,” he stated, alluding to the town’s historical dependence on the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). With revitalization efforts for the FSC underway, Lautoka is now looking toward other developments to create jobs and stimulate local retail activity, contributing to a vibrant economic cycle.

Although the Lautoka City Council has confirmed that no new developments are set for this year, Special Administrator Manasa Draki explained that the Council is diligently working to entice investment. He assured that applications are being meticulously reviewed alongside the Building Department to sustain investor confidence, even amid the prolonged approval processes.

There is a sense of hope that, through collaboration and focused efforts on addressing regulatory hurdles, Lautoka can pave the way for future developments that will help rejuvenate its economy.
