Lautoka Hosts International Gymnastics Workshop to Boost Inclusive Fitness in Fiji

A group of 30 participants from various homes and shelters in Fiji’s Western Division is currently engaged in a two-day Taiso workshop organized by the Fiji National Sports Commission (FNSC) at the Western Disability Centre in Lautoka. This workshop, which kicked off yesterday and wraps up today, is designed to promote inclusive physical fitness through gymnastics-based exercises that cater to individuals of all ages and abilities. Notable attendees include representatives from the Golden Age Home, Daulomani Home, and Red Cross Ba.

The training is being led by Professor Araki Tatsuo, an expert from the Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU) in Tokyo, Japan. He explained that the workshop takes on a more professional approach this time around. The first day is devoted to teaching basic movements, while the second day focuses on detailed instruction on how to effectively teach and apply the exercises among the participants.

Professor Araki has expressed his satisfaction with the positive response from the participants, many of whom are eager to absorb the knowledge and translate it back to their communities. This reflects a growing initiative in Fiji to enhance accessibility and inclusion in physical activities, akin to a recent event where over 600 primary school students participated in a gymnastics session led by Professor Araki at Gandhi Bhawan Primary School, which sought to instill the joy of physical activity within educational frameworks.

Such initiatives are vital in fostering an active lifestyle among individuals from diverse backgrounds. They emphasize not only the benefits of physical health but also the joy and camaraderie that can emerge from shared experiences in sports and fitness. As these workshops and training sessions continue to flourish, they present a hopeful trajectory for enhancing community bonds and encouraging healthier lifestyles, setting the stage for more inclusive and enriched physical fitness programs across Fiji.
