The Lautoka Hospital Children’s Ward has undergone a significant transformation, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the FIJI Water Foundation, FIJI Water, Neptune Pacific Direct Line (NPDL), and Aspen Medical. This project was a part of the Wonderful Neighbour initiative, which aims to enhance healthcare in the Western Division through community-driven efforts.
The Wonderful Neighbour program encourages employees from FIJI Water and NPDL to propose impactful projects within their local communities. Each participant receives FJ$100 and access to eight paid hours to actively contribute to these initiatives, fostering a strong bond between the organizations and the communities they serve.
Gavin Whiteside, the Chief Executive Officer of Aspen Medical in Fiji, expressed gratitude for the community support during the project. He emphasized that the improvements made to the Children’s Ward by the FIJI Water Foundation would have lasting benefits for many families in the area.
The renovation project included a refreshing update to the ward’s waiting area, improvements to restroom facilities, and the donation of a washing machine and dryer. Additionally, a new swing set and four trikes were installed for children’s enjoyment. The team dedicated three days to various tasks, including water blasting, painting, tiling, and landscaping, with 120 employees participating in the efforts.
Semi Lotawa, Director of the FIJI Water Foundation, highlighted that this year, 798 employees have contributed to 21 Wonderful Neighbour projects throughout Fiji, accumulating over 4,500 volunteer hours. This latest initiative showcases the Foundation’s commitment to fostering positive change, community pride, and sustainability in Fiji.
The renovation of the Lautoka Hospital Children’s Ward represents a significant step forward not only in enhancing healthcare facilities but also in inspiring community engagement and cooperation among local organizations. This kind of collaboration offers hope for future initiatives that can continue to improve the well-being of families in the region.
