A new temporary pharmacy has officially opened at Lautoka Hospital, offering a much-needed solution for patients who previously had to visit external pharmacies for their prescribed medications. This development comes in light of Aspen Medical’s closure of its outpatient pharmacy services, which had compelled patients to rely on private pharmacies, thereby increasing their travel times and financial burdens.
This temporary pharmacy, valued at approximately $30,000, aims to alleviate these challenges by allowing patients to collect their prescribed medicines immediately following their medical consultations, leading to a more streamlined healthcare experience. Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, who officiated the opening, highlighted the pressing need for such a facility. He noted that between September of last year and late January of this year, pharmacies in Lautoka dispensed around 8,000 prescriptions initially issued by Aspen Lautoka Hospital.
Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized the urgency behind the initiative, stating, “The data clearly shows that in the few months that the service was closed in Aspen Lautoka Hospital, there was an increase in the number of prescriptions from here to the private sector, and that is why it is only fair that we as government ensure that there’s some continuity in service.” He also pointed out that the new pharmacy will serve not only the residents of Lautoka but also individuals from the broader Western Division who travel to the hospital for treatment.
While acknowledging past delays in enhancing healthcare access for Fijians, Dr. Lalabalavu reassured the community of the government’s ongoing commitment to addressing critical gaps in service delivery. The opening of this temporary pharmacy marks a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility and ensuring that patients receive the necessary medications without undue hassle. This positive move reflects a proactive approach to healthcare, fostering an environment where patients can receive timely and convenient medical assistance.
