Lautoka Hospital Opens Prefabricated Outpatient Pharmacy to Boost Fiji’s Medicine Access

A new prefabricated pharmacy is being established at the Aspen-managed Lautoka Hospital, aimed at significantly enhancing the outpatient services available to the community. During a recent visit to the construction site, Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa highlighted the progress and importance of the Outpatient Pharmacy Dispensary, which is specifically designed to facilitate better patient flow and improve access to essential medicines.

Ravunawa praised the collaborative efforts of the Ministry’s team and its partners, underlining this initiative as a reflection of the government’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare closer to the communities that need it. He expressed optimism that the new facility will greatly support outpatient services and enrich patient experiences at Lautoka Hospital.

The Assistant Minister also acknowledged the dedication of the Kamikamica Health Centre team for maintaining high service standards in light of increasing patient demand. The development of similar prefabricated pharmacy facilities at Kamikamica Health Centre and Ba Aspen Medical Hospital is anticipated, further broadening access to healthcare services.

The newly constructed pharmacy at Lautoka represents a pivotal step towards achieving efficient and patient-centered healthcare delivery across Fiji. This effort aligns well with previous initiatives aimed at minimizing the operational challenges that hospitals have faced during transitional phases, notably those relating to outpatient pharmacy services at both Lautoka and Ba Hospitals.

Recent changes have seen a restructuring of the process for obtaining outpatient medicines, directing patients to designated public health centers and private pharmacies participating in the Free Medicine Scheme. This strategic shift, while challenging, is intended to ensure better access to medications in the long run as Fiji’s healthcare system continues to evolve.

Such developments are promising for the future of healthcare in Fiji, showcasing a collaborative spirit in addressing the challenges of medical access. By investing in new infrastructures and enhancing logistics, the government is taking proactive steps towards strengthening the resilience and quality of healthcare services for all Fijians.
