A heartbreaking incident occurred in Lautoka last week when Atalo Laba, a 40-year-old street sweeper for the Lautoka City Council, lost his life in a hit-and-run accident. His sudden death has left his wife, Laisani Mere, and their young son grappling with the loss of the family breadwinner.

Laisani shared her disbelief over the tragic event, revealing that she only realized her husband was missing when she was unable to find him after he left home last Monday. Initially, she thought he might have been out celebrating New Year’s Eve, but by Tuesday, her worry deepened when there was still no word from him. She reported him missing at the Lautoka Police Station but was advised to wait as many were still in a celebratory mood. After checking with his workplace, it became clear that he hadn’t returned home.

Desperate to find her husband, Laisani resumed the search on Friday, speaking with locals who said they had spotted him in town. However, her hopes were dashed when she received a call from the police on Saturday about a body found in Vitogo. It was not until the following day that she identified Atalo’s body and learned it was a victim of a hit-and-run incident.

Laisani expressed deep sorrow over their recent move to Vanuakula, where they had hoped to create a new life, as well as the recent loss of Atalo’s mother, who passed away less than 100 days prior. The family’s suffering has been compounded by these significant losses.

Authorities have begun questioning the driver suspected in the hit-and-run, and investigations are ongoing. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the profound impact such incidents can have on families and communities, highlighting the importance of road safety and accountability. As the Laba family navigates this painful chapter, they have the support of those around them, a critical element for healing during these difficult times.
