Last night, the 78692 Halal Supermarket in Lautoka became the scene of a robbery allegedly orchestrated by three individuals. According to the store’s owner, Rahim Gul, the incident occurred around 9:05 PM. One of the suspects reportedly entered the supermarket with a knife while two others, wearing masks, accompanied him. During this distressing event, three of Gul’s children, a staff member, and several customers were present in the store, including a mother and daughter who managed to flee upon realizing the threat.

In a quick-thinking move, one of Gul’s sons, positioned at the counter, activated the security shutters. This action prompted the suspect to flee, but not before absconding with two coin bags containing approximately $500 to $600. The matter has already been reported to the Lautoka Police, who are now investigating the case.

This robbery adds to a series of recent similar incidents in the area, raising significant concerns about security measures in retail environments. There have been other cases, such as in Suva’s Laucala Beach, where cashiers have faced armed robberies, leading to substantial losses. These events highlight vulnerabilities faced by supermarkets and call for heightened security protocols to protect employees and customers.

While the robbery at the Halal Supermarket underscores these ongoing challenges, the rapid response of local law enforcement provides some reassurance. It emphasizes the importance of community cooperation in aiding police efforts to swiftly apprehend suspects and improve overall security. In light of these events, businesses are encouraged to review and enhance their safety measures, seeking collaboration with authorities whenever possible, to foster safer environments for their patrons.
