Heavy rainfall has caused significant challenges for residents and travelers in Lautoka, particularly at the Vaivai crossing, which was submerged under floodwaters yesterday. Deepak Chand took precautionary measures by packing a spare change of clothes before heading to work and arranging alternative accommodations for his family. He reported waiting from 6 am for the waters to recede and was finally able to cross around midday. Concerned about the potential rise in water levels, he decided to stay with a cousin overnight to avoid any risks.
Similarly, Naushad Ali and his son, Sahil Shiraz Ali, both truck drivers, found themselves stranded at the Drasa dam road while waiting for the conditions to improve. They spent nearly two hours at the location, opting to avoid their vehicles crossing the floodwaters due to the dangers posed by both the current and hidden debris. Mr. Shiraz Ali recounted their experience earlier that morning when they managed to cross but were caught off guard by rapidly rising water levels upon their return.
Such instances underscore the importance of preparation and caution in the face of unpredictable weather conditions, particularly for those who commute or work in flood-prone areas. The community is facing the challenge with resilience, emphasizing safety first amidst the disruptions caused by the adverse weather.
