An early morning blaze on Sunday devastated a four-bedroom residence located in Navutu Village, Lautoka, displacing six individuals and causing an estimated $200,000 in damages. The home belonged to a 58-year-old pastor affiliated with the Cross Over Ministry.
The fire was first detected by the homeowner’s 30-year-old daughter-in-law, who awoke to find flames erupting from one of the bedrooms. She promptly alerted her family to the danger.
Joel Israel, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Fire Authority (NFA), reported that the NFA Command Centre in Suva notified the Lautoka Fire Station at 3:07 AM. Firefighters, equipped with two fire trucks and eight personnel, arrived on the scene at 3:53 AM to find the structure fully engulfed in flames. The fire was brought under control by 4:06 AM, effectively preventing its spread to adjacent properties.
In light of this tragic incident, Israel emphasized the importance of fire safety measures. He urged the public to ensure that heating coils are placed on non-flammable surfaces, away from curtains, and that flammable liquids are stored safely. Common practices, such as turning off lights and electrical appliances when not in use, can significantly minimize fire hazards.
Israel also highlighted the need for vigilance during the festive season, noting that families often spend extended time away from home due to church services and celebrations, which can increase fire risks. He urged families to create home escape plans and educate children about fire safety protocols.
This incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of fire safety in our homes, especially during periods of increased activity. By following recommended safety practices, communities can help prevent such tragedies in the future.
