Lautoka, the reigning champion of the Battle of the Giants, secured a convincing 4-2 victory over Labasa during round 13 of the Digicel Fiji Premier League at Churchill Park yesterday.

The match saw the Blues take the lead in the 31st minute when Sairusi Naulubu’s cross inadvertently deflected off Labasa’s Iliesa Lino for an own goal. Although both teams created various scoring chances in the first half, neither was able to convert those opportunities into goals.

In the second half, Lautoka, supported by their home fans, displayed a more cohesive play, leading to an increased scoring tally. Shiva Pillay doubled Lautoka’s advantage in the 52nd minute, followed by a penalty conversion from star striker Saula Waqa, extending their lead to 3-0.

Labasa almost mounted a comeback with a threatening free kick that was expertly saved by the Lautoka goalkeeper. Taniela Waqa managed to find the net for Labasa, momentarily reviving their hopes before Naulubu’s impressive solo effort restored Lautoka’s lead to 4-1.

In the closing moments, Labasa intensified their efforts, with Christopher Wasasala scoring during injury time. Wasasala also had a chance to further close the gap from the penalty spot, but unfortunately missed the opportunity.

Lautoka team director Vipul Sharma remarked that their strategy was effective, as reflected in the outcome of the match. He emphasized the need to sharpen their defensive tactics since, despite scoring well, they were also conceding goals.

Labasa’s head coach, Ravneel Pratap, acknowledged the disappointment of the loss and the decline in their DFPL standings. He noted that his team deviated from their game plan, crediting Lautoka for their solid performance. Pratap indicated that a regrouping effort is necessary, stressing that decision-making must improve as it has been a weak point for the team in this match.
