The Lautoka City Council is reinforcing its dedication to food safety by ensuring that all food businesses within the city comply with stringent hygiene practices. Taitusi Kata, chairperson of the council’s special administrators, underscored this commitment during a food safety awareness workshop aimed at eatery and backhouse operators.
Kata emphasized the importance of adhering to the Food Safety Act 2003, Food Safety Regulation 2009, and the Food Establishment (Grading) Regulations 2012, stating that consumer interests are paramount in all food business operations. He brought attention to recurring issues highlighted by both mainstream and social media, including the sale of adulterated food, the presence of foreign materials in food, unhygienic practices, and illegal food operations—all of which endanger public health.
In a stern reminder, Kata noted that 47 food businesses have faced prosecution due to safety violations, with one recent case resulting in a $7,000 fine for insanitary operations and operating without a valid health license. This proactive stance aims to reduce food safety breaches and improve overall public health.
The Food Safety Awareness Workshop, which received support from the Ministry of Health, the Fiji Competition & Consumer Commission, the Consumer Council of Fiji, and the Water Authority of Fiji, not only guided participants in maintaining high standards of food safety but also provided them with certificates upon completion of the training sessions.
These efforts align with ongoing initiatives across Fiji to enhance food safety standards, as highlighted by recent inspections revealing significant hygiene concerns in various regions. Authorities have intensified enforcement actions, reminding food establishments of their responsibility to provide safe, quality food while protecting consumer welfare.
