Some businesses in Lautoka express skepticism regarding the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (FCCC) assurances that the ongoing nationwide consultations about a proposed increase in electricity tariffs are serious and not mere formalities. Despite efforts to engage with the public, several business owners fear that their feedback may not lead to any changes in the initial decision to raise tariffs, a sentiment shared by Meena, a sales assistant at Roopesh Gift Shop, and others who chose to remain anonymous.

These anonymous sources recounted past consultations where they felt their opinions were overlooked, raising doubts about the potential impact of the current discussions. Meena echoed these concerns, unsure whether public input would be genuinely valued in this process.

In contrast, the FCCC maintains that the consultations are thoughtfully considered, with Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta promising that feedback will undergo a thorough review over the next two weeks before a final decision is made on the tariff proposal.

The business community in Lautoka is vocal in their opposition to the increase. Richard Shafiq, president of the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, warned that should the tariff increase be approved, local businesses might be compelled to raise prices to maintain their profitability. He advocated for delaying the review for two years to allow businesses and consumers to adjust appropriately.

Public consultations are currently underway in various locations, including Ba, Lautoka, and Savusavu, following sessions in Labasa, Nadi, and Sigatoka earlier this week, with further discussions planned in Tavua and Rakiraki.

This ongoing engagement reflects a broader recognition of the need to involve the public and businesses in significant decision-making processes that could impact their livelihoods, emphasizing the importance of community input in shaping future regulatory measures.
