The $3 million upgrade of the Lautoka bus station is officially in progress, as announced by Taitusi Rasoki, the chairperson of the city’s board of special administrators. The renovation project will be executed in three phases to alleviate traffic congestion in the area.
The first phase focuses on the bus bay area in Ba, followed by upgrading the frontage of the Market Police Post in the second phase. The final stage will enhance the entrance to the Sugar City Mall, which faces the junction leading toward Namoli Avenue. Mr. Rasoki assured the community that traffic will be redirected to various convenient locations to minimize disruption for both the public and local residents.
During the upgrade, buses from the Lautoka-Ba bus rank will temporarily park along Namoli Avenue. The project is scheduled for completion by November or December of this year. Additionally, special administrator Ajay Kumar revealed plans to improve the municipal market, with an allocation of $100,000 to $150,000 earmarked for this effort. Exterior work is currently underway, with future plans for the interior of the market space, noted to have a triangular shape.
Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association president Narayan Reddy expressed gratitude that the long-awaited upgrade, initially promised a decade ago, is finally happening. He urged residents to be patient with the inevitable dust and disruption while imploring contractors to take necessary measures to minimize dust emissions, noting concerns about potential health impacts, particularly regarding asbestos still present in parts of the market.
This renovation aligns with ongoing infrastructure enhancement efforts around Fiji. Similar projects, like those in Suva and Nadi, show a commitment from local authorities to modernize public transport facilities, improve safety, and provide a better overall experience for commuters.
With ongoing developments, there is an optimistic outlook for the community, anticipating that these upgrades will not only improve transit infrastructure but also enhance the quality of life and economic activity in Lautoka. Keeping the community engaged and involved will ensure that these improvements serve their intended purpose effectively.
