Delays in the enhancement of the Lautoka Bus Stand have led to increasing frustration among commuters and bus operators who are grappling with worsening congestion, extended walking distances, and heightened safety concerns during their daily travels.
Bus operators report a significant rise in traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours in the afternoon and lunchtime, when buses, taxis, and private vehicles converge on narrow streets surrounding the temporary bus stop. Paulini Waqabaca, a resident from Natokowaqa in Lautoka, highlighted the pressing issue: “With only one main access road, vehicles frequently struggle to navigate, making it challenging for drivers and stressful for passengers.”
The situation has been particularly inconvenient for shoppers and elderly residents, as bus operators noted that passengers are often required to carry heavy shopping bags across long distances due to the relocation of bus parking away from supermarkets and market areas. “Passengers have to walk all the way from that side to this side, so all we have to do is try to help customers walk with their shopping,” Waqabaca added, underscoring the difficulties faced by those needing assistance.
In response to the mounting pressure, bus operators and commuters are urging the local council to expedite the reopening of the upgraded bus stand. They argue that the timely completion of the project would significantly alleviate traffic congestion, bolster safety, and restore convenience for the public.
Lautoka’s Special Administrator, Manasa Draki, attributed the delays to adverse weather conditions in the previous year. He emphasized that ensuring the completion of the upgrade is now a top priority, which he believes will lead to marked improvements for the city.
As the community continues to advocate for progress, there is hope that the finished project will not only enhance transit conditions but also elevate the overall experience for both commuters and residents in Lautoka.
