Lautoka FC and Suva FC battled to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the Extra Premier League at Churchill Park. The game showcased a strong start from Suva, who dominated possession early on and created numerous scoring opportunities. Their efforts resulted in an opening goal by Siotame Kubu, giving Suva a 1-0 lead at the halftime break.
Despite Suva’s promising start and several chances to extend their lead, they were unable to convert, which allowed Lautoka to regroup during the halftime interval. The home team emerged with renewed vigor in the second half and earned a penalty, which Rusiate Matarerega successfully converted, leveling the score at 1-1.
As the match progressed, both teams fought aggressively for a winner, but neither could break the deadlock by the final whistle, resulting in an evenly matched draw at full time.
Suva’s coach, Babs Khan, commended his players’ efforts while acknowledging the challenges of starting a season after a festive period. He expressed understanding for the players coming from various backgrounds and working to find their rhythm together. “This is the first game; we can’t really expect a lot from the players. They are coming from different walks of life and trying to gel. It’s all part of the game. We had a lot of opportunities to score in the first half,” Khan remarked.
The draw means both teams share points as the Extra Premier League season gets underway. Lautoka will aim to leverage their home advantage in future games, while Suva will look to solidify their offensive strategy moving forward.
In a competitive fixture in the same round, Dayals Sawmillers Ba secured a convincing 5-2 victory over a determined Nadroga side. Key contributions came from Sairusi Nalaubu, Rusiate Doidoi, Elijah Abetem, and Penisoni Tirau, who each found the net, while Semesa Sacere and Tomasi Tuicakau scored for Nadroga. The season has started with an exciting atmosphere, hinting at a thrilling campaign ahead.
