The province of Lau is facing significant challenges in combating the escalating threat of drug use, largely attributed to a declining population and limited opportunities for the youth, according to Roko Tui Lau, Jioji Kalounivalu. Recent demographic assessments indicate a sharp decrease in the population of the islands, from approximately 9,000 residents in previous years to around 6,800 in 2023. This decline has hampered the ability of many villages to address pressing social issues, particularly drug abuse.

Kalounivalu noted that the reduced population, particularly in villages, has diminished the resources and capacity necessary to effectively tackle the drug problem. To combat these trends, the province is actively encouraging the youth to return to Lau and participate in local constructive initiatives that steer them away from drugs and crime.

A pivotal response to this issue is the planned reopening of Ratu Mara College as a vocational center in Lakeba, in collaboration with Fiji National University (FNU). This center aims to equip young people with essential vocational skills, allowing them to find sustainable livelihoods locally, rather than relying on employment opportunities in urban centers.

Additionally, the province is working to revive the Lau Youth Council and is urging traditional leaders who reside in urban areas to return home. These leaders play a crucial role in guiding their communities, especially in facing social challenges.

Despite these proactive measures, significant hurdles remain, particularly in terms of infrastructure and health facilities. Kalounivalu acknowledged that many elderly residents require regular medical attention, creating additional challenges for community health services.

The initiatives in Lau exemplify a determined effort to build community resilience, combat the drug issue, and create sustainable opportunities for the youth. These strides towards revitalizing the local workforce and fostering community leadership bring hope for a brighter future for the islands, despite the demographic and geographic obstacles they face.
