Residents of the Lau Islands are expressing serious concerns about irregular shipping schedules and insufficient wharf infrastructure. With only five operational ports available for the archipelago’s 19 islands, the transportation of people and essential goods is severely hindered, affecting daily life and survival for many.
Safaira Tagivuni, a representative for Lau Women, highlighted that the shipping service for the Lau Group is currently scheduled to operate just once a month, a frequency that residents feel is inadequate. She noted, “Ships are delayed or don’t arrive, which affects everything: our access to medical care, our children’s education, and even the transport of food and building materials.”
In addition to the irregularity of service, concerns have also been raised about the lack of proper infrastructure at the jetties, which impacts the efficiency and safety of transport operations. These issues were brought to the forefront during a consultation for the National Rural Development Plan, which aims to engage local communities and address their diverse needs through collaborative efforts.
The ongoing dialogue surrounding these logistical challenges reflects the community’s hope for improvement, as addressing these issues could lead to better access to essential services and a stronger future for the Lau Islands.
